I'm a privileged person. I know Christine Sullivan, the exquisite Melbourne based singer. Pity more people don't know of her. ![]() Christine is well-known to the music community because she's a sublime singer. It's not just the exquisite purity of her voice; it's her interpretation of lyrics and her musicality. Her talent is on display in all its glory on the long awaited new CD 'Away' which she produced. What makes this recording such a treat is the company she keeps and the courage and trust to produce a CD like this. Christine invited stellar players and people to accompany her on Away. Four of the songs are totally improvised. That's mega trust and confidence in musicians who play with soul as well as chops. There's Tony Buchanan on sax and flute. Evripides Evripidou on bass and guitar effects. David Jones on drums and percussion. Also assisting were David Herschfelder, piano, Craig Ross and Steve Magnusson, guitars, Luke Howard and Andy Miln. Standout tracks are the four improv' pieces and the hauntingly dark Murdunna. On River (Joni Mitchell) we are reminded why Christine is the doyenne of Joni's repertoire. Christine is a rare talent, a Jewell. She should be a national treasure. They recognised her as such in the US, ten yeas ago and in London as well and of course in clubs, concerts and festivals in Australia where our best musos and singers clamber to work with her. If she simply sang at her gigs, that would be enough. But she has such stories to tell and observations that are soooo engaging and slightly 'unhinged' that each performance is its own masterpiece. The pity is that Christine isn't performing enough these days. Her next move is to New York. We all know she will be a huge hit, and they will appreciate her talent; then we might take notice. Take notice NOW friends. Grab a copy of Away, before she goes away underappreciated and is lost to us. And another thing. Christine's soulful music is a beautiful backdrop to intimate conversations with new friends about matters of the heart and soul. |
