The Media & Publicity. Faithful Friend. Woeful Foe
Written by Brian James
When you are receiving good publicity, that's a good thing.
It can drive sales, boost your brand, create a launching pad for a media career.

It all started with a semi nude photo

Australia's most photographed beauty (Lara Bingle) hired a new manager who is known for his 'exhuberant' approach to achieving rapid, widespread publicity.

It backfired.
(The 'toothy' Lara was known for being 'beautiful' and the fiance of Michael Clarke, the Vice Captain of the Australian cricket team.)

After a semi nude photo of her in the shower was released (without her consent),  her agent sold her story to a women's magazine.

That's when the Media turned.

Suddenly, Ms Bingle was sensational news and the media followed her everywhere. Understandably she wasn't happy and gave the media the 'finger'. She refused to talk with any of the media pack who were now doubting her side of the story and accusing her of perhaps chasing the 'money'.

From having the media eating out of her hand and photographing her at every opportunity and growing her profile and brand, they are now not so enamoured with Lara. Nor is Lara's fiance, or former fiance.

The engagement is off!

Young Lara lost Michael, the media and the public's sympathy and it will take a miracle to woo them back. Her team misread the situation and destroyed her career, for the moment.

The Media can be a wonderful friend, but a woeful foe. Deal with them with respect and care.
